Agartala: Border Security Force personnel shot and killed a Bangladeshi national early Sunday morning along the Tripura border. The incident occurred near Gate 47 of the Magruli Gram Panchayat in the Unakoti district. The man, identified by local sources as 30-year-old Tara Mia of Dastekhi, died on Indian soil.

Trouble started after midnight when a group of suspected smugglers crossed the international boundary. According to Unakoti Superintendent of Police Rishab, the men approached BSF troops near Border Pillar 1847. The group allegedly threatened the patrol team with iron daos and cricket bats.

BSF guards tried other measures to stop the intruders. The situation turned deadly when the group refused to back down. "BSF personnel first used other methods to deter them and ultimately resorted to firing as per established procedure, following which the group fled towards the Bangladesh side," Rishab said. Troops found Mia dead during a follow-up search of the area.

Local villagers claim the group was moving Burmese cigarettes across the border line. Police have not yet officially verified the smuggling allegations or confirmed the man's identity. Authorities are now reviewing the shooting and the circumstances that led to the confrontation. Security remains tight in the Kailashahar subdivision as officials look into the protocols governing the use of force.
