Agartala: A 30-year-old Bangladeshi national is dead after a Border Security Force (BSF) shooting in Tripura’s Unakoti district. The incident happened after midnight on Sunday near border pillar number 1847, close to Gate 47 in Ward 3 of Magruli Gram Panchayat.

Reports identify the man as Tara Mia from Das Teki village in the Prithimpasha area of Moulvibazar district. His father is named Abdul Malik. Sources claim a group of five to six men crossed into Indian territory carrying suspected smuggling goods, including Burmese cigarettes. They refused to leave after repeated warnings from patrol officers.

Unakoti Superintendent of Police Rishab stated the group moved toward the fence and attempted to attack BSF personnel with an iron dao and a cricket bat. "BSF personnel first used other methods to deter them and ultimately resorted to firing as per established procedure, following which the group fled towards the Bangladesh side," Rishab said.

Mia died at the scene from his injuries. Police from the Irani station arrived to secure the area and move the body to Unakoti District Hospital. Dr. Imran Ahmed confirmed the remains arrived at the facility around 11 am Sunday for a post-mortem. The body stays in the morgue as officials coordinate repatriation.

Authorities have tightened security across the frontier. Both BSF command and local police are currently investigating the circumstances of the intrusion and the use of force.
