Shillong: The Meghalaya BJP stepped up attacks on Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on August 11. They criticized him for stalling parliamentary proceedings and ignoring alleged police violence against students in Jharkhand. Wankitbok Pohshna, the state party general secretary, detailed a harsh crackdown in Ranchi where authorities reportedly used tear gas, water cannons, lathis, and barricades against protesters demanding jobs. Some women reported their clothes were torn during the struggle.
Pohshna slammed Gandhi for selecting issues based on political convenience. He noted Gandhi frequently shifts demands in the House, moving from the NEET issue to seeking statements from Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the Pahalgam incident. The BJP insists the government is ready to talk. They claim Home Minister Shah is prepared to address every concern in a full-scale debate.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju echoed this stance outside Parliament. He accused the Opposition of fleeing from actual discussion. “Yesterday, we had offered that the Union government is ready for a detailed discussion on whatever happened regarding the students’ protest, and we had also prepared the response,” Rijiju said. He offered to extend the debate for two days to cover every angle of the protests.
Other BJP figures joined the fray. Union Minister Giriraj Singh called Gandhi double-faced and demanded he either drop support for the JMM-led Jharkhand government or quit his post. MP Tejasvi Surya accused the Opposition of turning students into political fodder. The BJP also denied Gandhi's claims of gunfire during a Jantar Mantar demonstration, asserting no shots were fired. They maintain the repeated disruptions are a calculated attempt to stir chaos.
