Guwahati: Barpeta Medical College and Hospital hosted a suicide prevention event on September 10. The District Mental Health Programme collaborated with the college to mark World Suicide Prevention Day. Faculty, students, and healthcare professionals gathered on campus to discuss mental health. The event featured the Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent, the Superintendent, and the Vice Principal.
Speakers demanded a shift in how society handles psychological distress. They pushed for a non-judgmental environment. "Suicide prevention a collective responsibility, timely support can save lives," experts noted during the session. Officials want the community to watch for warning signs and prioritize empathetic talk.
The program targeted the stigma that keeps people from seeking aid. Medical students heard how academic pressure and social isolation trigger emotional crises. Professionals urged attendees to listen to patients and peers to identify early distress signals. The meeting reinforced that asking for help is a sign of strength.
The District Mental Health Programme and the college pledged to keep improving support services across the Barpeta district. They want to ensure that help remains accessible to everyone who needs it.
