Kohima: Institutions across Nagaland marked World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, hosting events centered on the theme: Changing the Narrative on Suicide. The District Mental Health Programme in Kohima teamed up with the Naga Hospital Authority to train 34 General Nursing and Midwifery students. Chaplain Kashito S Sumi opened the event with prayer before faculty member Inaholi Assumi challenged the social stigma surrounding mental health. Clinical Psychologist Ruokuotunuo Rutsa provided practical tools for emotional wellness.
Dr. Senilo Magh, the nodal officer for the program, told attendees that society must break silence and barriers. The session was chaired by Psychiatric Social Worker Veronica Nriame. At Immanuel College, the Internal Quality Assurance Cell held a separate event featuring counselor Ketuno Sophie Imchen. She urged students to focus on empathy and mindful communication to build safer communities. The college event included a video presentation from M.A. English students and private counseling for those in need.
Principal Dr. Th Sharatchandra Singh welcomed the participants. The program also featured an invocation by Inaholi Ayemi and coordination by Nengpilhing. In Dimapur, North East Christian University partnered with the All Nagaland Counsellors Association for an outreach event. Director Dr. Kangzangding Thou called for environments where people feel safe asking for help. Dr. Fr. Pezalhoukho George discussed the history of suicide prevention while Bokatoli Yeptho addressed the legal shift under the Mental Healthcare Act. The event concluded after an interactive session where students practiced identifying warning signs.
