Kohima: The All Sümi Students’ Union visited the Health and Wellness Centre in Akuluto on September 22. They found the facility struggling with broken infrastructure. Essential medicines remain scarce. Supply chains are failing.
The union demands consistent delivery to maintain care for rural residents. Staff at the centre reported a grim trend involving local patients. Officials noted that some individuals are reselling drugs, including to students. The union warned that "such practices could pose risks to students’ health" and urged authorities to boost monitoring and preventive measures immediately.
The student group later toured Government Higher Secondary School in Akuluto. They praised the administration for banning proxy teachers. Accountability matters. The school needs an Office Assistant and an Environmental Studies teacher to fill current gaps. A boundary wall is also missing, creating safety concerns for the campus.
The union acknowledged Kazheto Kinimi, the MLA and Advisor for the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, for his contributions. Kinimi currently pays the salary for a teacher covering MIL Sütsa. The group credited this move as a vital step to preserve the Sümi language.
