Guwahati: Bishu Limbu beat the odds. A student from the isolated Rajnagar area of the Powai Forest Village in Assam’s Margherita Assembly Constituency, he hit a 99.63 percentile in the NEET-UG 2026 exam. Limbu pulled 610 marks out of 720, landing an All India Rank of 7,320. He battled poor road conditions, spotty mobile service, and lean finances to make the grade.
Limbu studied at R.D. Senior Secondary School. He also nailed a 97.21 percentile in JEE Main 2026 and grabbed 15th place in the Assam Combined Entrance Examination. His teachers noted his rigid discipline, often choosing to stay in his rented room during breaks to grind out extra study hours. The All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union stepped in back in 2024 to help him land his school spot and provided a two-year merit scholarship to keep him on track.
Gorkha activist Khem Bahadur Chetry visited Limbu at home to celebrate the win. Chetry noted, "Bishu secured the highest NEET score among successful candidates from R.D. Senior Secondary School so far." The union members hope he hits his target of becoming a doctor.
Other students in the Digboi region also cleared the bar. Arshpreet Kaur from Janata Road, Chariali Bazar, bagged an All India Rank of 89,254 with 501 marks. She relied entirely on self-study. Anisha Chetry, hailing from Punyajan village near Philobari Amguri, scored 509 marks to qualify. A wave of students from both rural and urban corners of the Digboi-Margherita belt successfully qualified for the medical entrance this year.
