Guwahati: Assam will mark the first death anniversary of singer Zubeen Garg on September 19. The Asom Nagorik Sanmilan is urging residents to play the late artist's music from morning until evening. They want the sound to span the entire state, stretching from Sadiya to Dhubri.
Hiren Gohain, Harekrishna Deka, Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, Paresh Malakar, Santanu Borthakur, and Abdul Mannan issued the call on behalf of the organization. They labeled the public reaction to his death last year as "unique and unprecedented." The group stated, "It will always be remembered as a remarkable phenomenon in the history of Assam."
Beyond his music, Garg left a mark through two collections of poetry, Uttar Nai and Romanthan. His writing explored existential themes, including the struggle against destiny, the confusion of human desire, and the erosion of societal values. His work often mirrored the philosophy of Søren Kierkegaard, emphasizing lived experience over material gain.
Garg remains a cultural touchstone. His influence reached across generations and social classes. While supporters fill the air with his melodies, the state government will host blood donation camps. These events aim to reflect the human values central to his poetic work. His songs, including the poignant Xomoyu Jen Thomoki Roi, continue to shape the emotional lives of his audience a year after his passing.
