Guwahati: Thousands flocked to Gandhi Chowk on Saturday evening to honor late singer Zubeen Garg. The town ground to a halt for Zubeen Divas. Local shops stayed shut and traffic slowed to a crawl as the commercial center filled with admirers. It was the biggest crowd in Doomdooma since the 2019 anti-CAA protests.
People of all ages arrived to pay their respects. They lit lamps outside their homes and businesses throughout the night. The atmosphere remained focused on the artist rather than politics. There were no political slogans heard at the event.
Garg held a deep connection to local culture. His music filled tea gardens, marketplaces, and homes across the state. The singer played a prominent role in the 2019 anti-CAA movement against the Citizenship Amendment Bill. During a protest in Guwahati, he stated the legislation "would affect Assam’s culture." He eventually joined thousands at the Chandmari rally to voice his opposition.
Saturday’s gathering marked his death anniversary. Fans from every generation came together to celebrate his legacy. The massive turnout demonstrated his lasting influence on the region.
