Assam Police arrest man for impersonating CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati: Assam Police took 34-year-old Pankaj Das into custody on July 18. They arrested him at his home in Dhopartari village. The suspect is the son of Ajit Das and falls under the jurisdiction of the Changsari Police Station in Kamrup district.

Investigators claim Das created a fake email address, cmassamgov.in@gmail.com, to pose as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He used the account to send bogus official communications to the public. The state police CPRO stated that the suspect operated with malicious intent.

Authorities registered the case on July 16, 2026, at the CID Cyber Police Station. The official filing is recorded as Case No. 11/2026. Charges include violations of Sections 61(2), 340(2), 336(3), and 319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, alongside Sections 66, 66C, and 66D of the Information Technology Act, 2008. The investigation continues.
