Guwahati: Assam’s flood death toll has reached 68. Disaster reports confirm the rising fatalities as the state battles severe seasonal destruction. Rural livelihoods face ruin. Khumtai MLA Mrinal Saikia demanded direct compensation for livestock and poultry losses, warning the disaster shattered the local economy. "The flood has completely shattered the economies of several districts in Assam, particularly the rural economy. The government must compensate people for losses in the poultry and livestock sectors," Saikia stated in Guwahati.
Legislators across party lines pledged one month of their salaries to support relief and rehabilitation. Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass and Deputy Speaker Habbey Teron initiated the drive. Secretariat employees will donate one day of pay. BJP, Congress, AIUDF, AGP, and BPF representatives joined the effort. TMC MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed also committed his salary. Raijor Dal MLA Mehboob Muktar remained silent and made no such announcement.
Relief operations move forward. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma deployed ministers to manage Sivasagar, Jorhat, and Golaghat. The BJP launched a fundraising drive aiming for Rs 12 crore to provide clothes to four lakh residents. Agriculture Minister Pijush Hazarika promised free paddy seeds for Jorhat, Sivasagar, and Charaideo within five days. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal emphasized that the central government is working with state authorities on critical supply delivery.
Pressure on the government is mounting. The AJYCP urged officials to raise death compensation to Rs 20 lakh and provide Rs 5 lakh to each affected family. The group also demanded loan waivers for farmers and traders. AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal donated Rs 2 crore personally and called for a Rs 10,000 crore central relief package. The crisis continues to displace thousands across the state.
