Assam Congress Demands National Crisis Status for State Flooding

Shillong: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee leaders met the Governor Wednesday. They demanded the federal government label the state’s recurrent flooding and river erosion as a national problem. The delegation sent a formal memorandum to the Prime Minister, Union Home Minister, Union Jal Shakti Minister, and Union Finance Minister.

The state suffers year after year. Families lose everything. The memorandum notes, "Approximately 40 percent of the state’s total land area, or around 31.05 lakh hectares, is flood-prone, which is significantly higher than the national average of 10.2 percent."

Monsoon rains and siltation in the Brahmaputra and Barak river basins drive the destruction. Embankment breaches and climate change make the situation worse. Farmers, laborers, and tea garden workers face permanent displacement. The party maintains that the state government lacks the capacity to fix this alone. They need central intervention to stop relying on temporary relief.

Congress wants a high-level task force. This group would include scientists, technical experts, and local residents. They demand federal funding for a master plan. Key goals include dredging, river regulation, and new early warning systems. The group also wants better coordination between central ministries to manage the Brahmaputra river basin effectively.
