Assam Lawmakers Head to Himachal to Tackle Monkey Problem

Guwahati: Six Assam legislators are heading to Himachal Pradesh to hunt for a permanent fix to the state's monkey menace. The Assam Legislative Assembly tasked the team to examine Himachal's monkey sterilization program and other population control tactics.

The delegation features Mrinal Saikia, Rupjyoti Kurmi, Dhiraj Gowala, Prakash Das, Rupesh Gowala, and Mridul Dutta. They represent the state's push to curb rising nuisance reports across Assam. Officials confirmed the mission via a memo from the Parliamentary Affairs Department.

Assam plans to launch its own sterilization drive this year. The team will study management practices and interventions on the ground to see if the Himachal model fits Assam's needs. "The visit is aimed at examining Himachal Pradesh's experience in controlling the monkey population through sterilisation and understanding measures that could potentially be adopted in Assam," the official communication noted. The lawmakers want to ensure this long-term strategy works before moving forward.
