Guwahati: Floods in Assam killed one more person on July 14, bringing the total death toll to three. The latest fatality occurred in the Naduar revenue circle of Sonitpur district. Over 37,000 people are now struggling against rising waters. The situation is dire.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported that 37,032 residents across six districts remain impacted by the deluge. This number jumped significantly from the 9,616 people affected just one day prior. Six districts are under water: Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Darrang, Jorhat, and Sivasagar. Dibrugarh also remains in the path of the flooding.
Lakhimpur took the hardest hit. Officials confirmed 35,696 people are affected in that district alone. Across the state, 12 revenue circles and 99 villages now face the surge. The Katakhal River continues to flow above the danger level.
Agricultural losses are mounting. Floodwaters submerged 1,103.94 hectares of farmland. Two animals died in the currents, and 16,139 others, including poultry, are affected. Infrastructure, including local roads, sustained damage.
The State Disaster Response Force rescued 16 people from Sonitpur in the last 24 hours. The government opened 20 relief distribution centres to manage the crisis. According to the ASDMA, authorities are busy with the relief efforts. Aid is moving into the impacted zones.
