Guwahati: Assam Congress leaders marched to the Raj Bhavan in Guwahati on Tuesday night. They want Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to quit. The protest followed allegations of widespread examination paper leaks. The party also demanded the government drop all police cases against students who joined the Sansad Chalo march in New Delhi on Monday.
Leader of the Opposition Wazed Ali Choudhury led the delegation to the Governor's residence in the Kharghuli area around 8 pm. Police blocked the group at the entrance. Officers told the delegation to hand over their memorandum to them instead, but the leaders refused. They insisted on meeting Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya face-to-face.
Jakir Hussain Sikdar, the Assam Congress working president and MLA, slammed the heavy police presence at the site. The group was small. They only wanted to air their grievances. "We are a small group of people here who have come to meet the Governor and place our grievances. But an extremely heavy deployment of police has been made," Sikdar said.
The delegation held a brief sit-in protest before they eventually left. Sikdar vowed that the agitation will not stop until students get justice. He noted the party acts in solidarity with those protesting in the capital. The BJP-led government has stayed silent on the matter.
