Guwahati: The Assam BJP labeled writer Nilotpal Bora a virtual terrorist on July 27. Party spokesperson Ranjib Kumar Sarmah accused Bora of insulting beneficiaries of the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. Sarmah claimed 32,000 families with critical illnesses received aid since 2021. During a press conference at state headquarters, Sarmah cited a Facebook Live broadcast where Bora allegedly discussed destabilizing the government. He urged police vigilance, noting these remarks risk unrest while responders manage Upper Assam floods. Sarmah also slammed Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi for disruptive conduct inside the Assembly. No response came from Bora or Gogoi.
Separately, police arrested five people following a fatal explosion at a Cachar iron casting unit. Officers took owner Rakesh Kumar Surana into custody in Guwahati on July 27. They brought him to Udharbond Police Station for questioning. Authorities booked him for negligence regarding safety failures at the Pangram facility. Four others, including the unit manager, faced formal arrest on Monday. Investigators suspect an LPG cylinder leak caused the Sunday blast. Four workers died: Kiran Munda, Appu Baraik, Shyamal Gour, and Sagar Nath. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a Rs 5 lakh ex gratia payment for each victim's family. Forensic teams continue their site inspection.
In other state developments, Assam Police seized 31,800 bottles of contraband worth Rs 3.18 crore in Sribhumi. Officers arrested two suspects during these twin operations. Chief Minister Sarma praised the force on July 28 for weakening criminal narcotics networks. "No genuine artist ever proclaims himself to be an artist," Sarmah stated while criticizing Bora. The CM emphasized that heightened vigilance drives these results.
