Guwahati: Residents in Bongaigaon district locked the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited office in Abhayapuri on Monday. The move followed a 48-hour blackout that left families in the Kakaijana and Sidhalsati areas sweltering in the heat. Power vanished on August 17 after a heavy downpour and never flickered back to life.
The outage dragged on for nearly two days. Patience hit a wall. Angry locals stormed the utility office and bolted the doors, demanding an immediate fix. Tensions boiled over as the site drew authorities from across the region.
The Sub-Divisional Commissioner, the Sub-Divisional Superintendent of Police, and local Abhayapuri police arrived to manage the crowd. The Sub-Divisional Engineer of Abhayapuri APDCL also stood on-site as the situation spiraled. Officials finally calmed the mob by promising to fix the lines and normalize the power grid. They told residents, "power supply would be restored and regularised."
This incident reflects a wider pattern of frustration. Residents are increasingly vocal about the frequent, long-term power cuts that hit during extreme weather events. The government now faces pressure to stop these outages before the next heat wave strikes.
