Kohima: Zeliang community organisations have issued strong condemnations following the alleged rape of an elderly woman in Kiphire. The accused, identified as Heluikie Nsanglung, is a member of the Nagaland Police force. Local groups are now calling for a swift, impartial investigation and the highest level of legal punishment for the crime.
The Zeliang Youth Organisation Chümoukedima described the incident as a heinous act against a vulnerable individual. The group called on authorities to ensure there is no clemency for such behavior. Meanwhile, the Zeliang Youth Organisation Dimapur emphasized that the incident is an assault on humanity itself. They noted that the accused held a position of public trust, stating, "The accused was a member of the police force, entrusted with the responsibility of protecting citizens and maintaining public confidence in the rule of law."
Representing women's concerns, the Zeliang Women Organisation labeled the assault barbaric and a betrayal of the duty to protect. They have demanded the immediate suspension and dismissal of the officer from service. Their charter of demands includes the formation of a Special Investigation Team to oversee a time-bound probe and the use of fast-track court proceedings to reach a verdict.
The organizations are also pushing for comprehensive state support for the victim, including medical care, counseling, and legal assistance. While condemning the actions of the individual officer, the Zeliang Youth Organisation Dimapur stressed that the Zeliang community maintains a firm commitment to the principles of dignity, justice, and communal harmony. They cautioned that any attempt to delay or compromise the judicial process will be met with firm resistance.
