Yimkhiung Naga Community Celebrates Metümnyo Festival

Kohima: The Yimkhiung Naga community marked their traditional Metümnyo festival this Saturday. Celebrations took place in Mokokchung, Kohima, and Pungro. This five-day event follows the millet harvest. It serves as a time for thanksgiving and community renewal.

In Kohima, the Yimkhiung Union Kohima held festivities at RCEMPA, Jotsoma. Deputy Chief Minister T R Zeliang spoke to the crowd. He called for Naga tribes to build bridges instead of barriers. Zeliang noted that Metümnyo represents the harvest of life, joy, and harmony. He stated, "Festivals were more than occasions of celebration and represented living expressions of identity and shared heritage." Advisor Kuzholuzo Nienu and Angami Public Organisation president Thejao Vihienuo also attended.

Pungro Town hosted celebrations at the local Multipurpose Hall. MLA S Kiusumew Yimchunger organized the event. Attendees included Pungro ADC Hotolu Sema, SDPO Y Ashito Aye, and YTC Executive Chairman Makezho. Rev Fr Dr Vemedo Joseph invoked blessings. Pungro Town GBs performed music, and Head GB Yansomong narrated the festival's history. The event honored the festival as a time for soul wrapping and welcoming newborns.

The Yimkhiung Union Mokokchung gathered at the YBCM Compound. President Shahoto welcomed guests. Kiumukam Yimkhiung explained the festival's social significance. Performers included the Yimkhiung Students Union and Yimkhiung Perü Mokokchung. Indigenous games followed. Y Among Yimchunger and L. John Yimkhiung shared greetings, while Y Kiuji offered the vote of thanks.

Metümnyo involves cleaning homes and repairing roads with daos and spades. It is a period for forgiveness and clearing old grievances. The final day, Shiresük, focuses on feasting, gift exchanges, and traditional dance. It remains a vital pillar of Yimkhiung culture.
