Kohima: The 2026 Tsüngremmung Festival swept through Mokokchung and Longsa Village this weekend. The Ao Naga community marked the pre-harvest season with traditional ceremonies, sports, and calls to protect their heritage. In Longsa, celebrations began Friday at the Community Hall. Minister for Rural Development and SIRD Metsübo Jamir served as the guest of honour. He urged residents to keep their traditions pure. "Culture remains the same; it is the people who uphold and showcase it," Jamir remarked.
Cultural competitions dominated the Longsa program. Five teams from four khels and the Mokokchung Unit vied for top spots in Wadang Ken and Lidem Meyu events. The Lion’s Club took the Wadang Ken title, while the Eagle Club won the Lidem Meyu category. The festival continued Saturday at Salang Lenden under the patronage of the Department of Tourism. Dignitaries including G. Ikuto Zhimomi and S. Keoshu Yimkhiung joined the festivities. Ceremonies included the Arr Atsütsü vine-pulling procession, traditional cockfights, and folk music performances.
Separately, Eden Academy held a Pre-Tsüngremmung event Friday in Mokokchung. Students joined District Cultural Officer Moses Newmai for the Arr Yimdong Sü procession, which stretched from Jubilee Memorial College to the school campus. Newmai reminded the attendees of their roots, stating, "We celebrate because our culture is our root. A tree without strong roots cannot stand."
At the Imkongmeren Sports Complex, the Ao Senden organized a massive gathering Friday. Lok Sabha MP S. Supongmeren Jamir addressed the crowd, highlighting the festival’s origins as a gesture of gratitude for harvests. He also called for systemic political reform. The event featured a tug-of-war competition where Alempang Ward defeated Salangtem Ward to secure the championship. Local officials, including Deputy Commissioner Ajit Kumar Verma and Mokokchung Municipal Council chairman Imkongchuba A., were also present to mark the occasion.
