Kohima: Longsa village is ready for its annual Tsüngremmung Festival. This pre-harvest celebration runs July 31 through August 3 in Nagaland’s Mokokchung district. The Longsa Village Council organizes the event under the Nagaland Tourism Department. They invited tourists and culture lovers from across the country to participate.
Festivities kick off July 31 with a cultural competition at the Community Hall. Minister for Rural Development and SIRD Metsübo Jamir will attend as guest of honour. The main event follows on August 1 at Salang Lenden. This features the ceremonial pulling of the vine, known as Arr Atsütsü.
Advisor for Youth Resources and Sports S Keoshu Yimkhiung will serve as honoured guest for the main celebration. Advisor for Land Resources G Ikuto Zhimomi will attend as guest of honour, while Metsübo Jamir acts as chief host. The Sangpur Village Cultural Troupe of the Yimkhiung tribe and the Surumi Village Cultural Troupe of the Sumi tribe will perform. Other activities include indigenous games, a ceremonial tug-of-war, and performances by competition winners.
The festival marks August 2 as The Lord’s Day. It closes August 3 with Ain Lenpi, a traditional ceremony including pathway cleaning and dances around a bonfire. The festival serves as a platform for oral traditions, folk songs, and communal bonding. It is rooted in Ao folklore, tracing its origin to a man named Merangshang who learned the value of thanksgiving rituals from Tsüngremshang. Longsa is the first Ao village to celebrate the event, historically known as Longsamung. As the government declared it a Tourist Village in 2006, organizers hope the event will "preserve and promote the cultural legacy of the Ao Nagas while encouraging cultural exchange and strengthening tourism in Nagaland."
