Guwahati: A night bus turned into a delivery room near Kaziranga. The Aideu Jaan bus was traveling from Guwahati to Dibrugarh when a woman went into labor. She was heading from Jagiroad to Dimou with seven family members. Panic gripped the cabin. Driver Babul Barpatra heard the commotion and stopped the vehicle on the roadside to assist.
Barpatra acted fast. He recalled the scene: "Some passengers asked me to switch off the lights. I immediately stopped the bus safely by the roadside. By the time the bus came to a halt, the delivery was about to take place."
The crew cleared the bus. Male passengers stepped outside to provide privacy. Staff and fellow travelers used blankets and clothes to build a makeshift space for the birth. They managed the emergency until the child arrived. Help arrived shortly after. An ambulance picked up the mother and her newborn daughter and took them to a nearby hospital. Both remain in stable condition.
The community effort drew praise. The bus owner gave the mother Rs. 5,000 to help with expenses. Passengers cheered the safe arrival after the tense mid-trip crisis.
