VPP Leader Shrugs Off Viral Slip at Shillong Protest

Shillong: VPP MDC Powell Sohklet fumbled his lines during a protest rally near the Secretariat in Shillong on August 8. He meant to chant against political rivals but got his own party name caught in the mix. Sohklet shouted NPP down down and UDP down down before accidentally yelling VPP down down. The mistake went viral instantly.

Sohklet lashed out at the coverage on social media. He argued that the clip distracts from the core issues his party raised at the event. The politician drew on his own history in the media industry to make his point. He recalled working as a journalist back in 1994.

His former editor gave him clear instructions on how to handle public speaking blunders. "Journalists should not pick up every mistake made by a speaker and turn it into a news story," he wrote. Sohklet expressed deep frustration with the modern news cycle. He claims reporters now wait for speakers to trip up just to grab headlines. The MDC insists the viral moment was just a slip of the tongue and not a true sentiment against his own organization.
