Kohima: The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) has launched a new scholarship initiative dedicated to 50 meritorious students from Nagaland. Announced at a press conference in Dimapur, the program aims to bolster educational opportunities for high-achieving and economically disadvantaged youth in the Northeast.
Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque introduced the scholarship alongside Vice Chancellor Prof GD Sharma and Dr. Kughatoli Aye. The awards are structured into three categories: 10 full free-ships for top-ranking students, 15 awards covering 50 percent of tuition fees, and 25 merit-cum-means scholarships that include a monthly stipend of Rs 2,000 for living expenses.
To qualify, applicants must maintain at least 80 percent marks in their previous exams and meet standard university admission requirements. While the free-ships do not cover hostel costs, Hoque noted that the university may provide extra support for students in dire financial situations. Regarding the university's regional goals, Hoque stated, "USTM is expanding its outreach across the Northeast to ensure equitable representation of students from all eight northeastern states."
In addition to the student awards, the university will present the Institutional Excellence Award-2026 to select schools in Nagaland for their contributions to education. Admissions for undergraduate and postgraduate programs are currently open for the new academic session.
