Kohima: The United Naga Council is shutting down national highways across Manipur. The group announced an indefinite economic blockade starting at 1 a.m. Wednesday. This escalation follows an Emergency Presidential Council Meeting held in Ukhrul on September 2. They want justice for six Naga hostages allegedly killed, mutilated, and dismembered by Kuki armed groups in Kangpokpi district on May 13, 2026.
Stoppages will hit every major route. The blockade impacts NH-2, NH-202 at Jessami, NH-37 at Jiribam, and NH-102A between Tadubi and Ukhrul. No goods-laden vehicles get a pass. The group stated, "Pursuant to the resolution adopted at an Emergency Presidential Council Meeting held 2nd September, 2026 at Ukhrul, the ongoing inter-district economic blockade will be intensified indefinitely on all National Highways."
Drivers of essential service vehicles can still move. This includes trucks hauling medical supplies, power, water, and telecom equipment. Media personnel are also exempt. The council urged the public to support the movement until the state delivers accountability for the victims. They hold this firm stance until they see real results.
