Ungma Celebrates Padma Shri Winner Guru Sangyusang Pongener

Kohima: Ungma village turned out in force on June 30 to honor one of its own. Residents gathered at Soyim Aonglenden to celebrate Guru Sangyusang Pongener after he received the Padma Shri award. He earned the honor in the Unsung Heroes category for his work protecting Ao Naga cultural heritage.

Pongener credits his early years for his path. He grew up learning traditions from his parents and grandparents. He eventually co-founded the Naga Wadir cultural group to spread Ao Naga traditions to the rest of the country. He pushed for active participation over static preservation. "Culture must be actively practised and shared rather than merely preserved," Pongener said.

Mokokchung Deputy Commissioner Ajit Kumar Verma called the event a major milestone for the region. He praised Pongener for spending his life documenting songs, dances, and oral history. Verma urged the local youth to follow his lead.

The event featured support from various groups, including the Ungma Council, Ao Senden, and the Department of Art and Culture. Watemdong Cultural Club performed traditional dances. The day ended with a thanksgiving prayer to cap off the celebration of the national recognition.
