Agartala: A delegation from Tripura, led by Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman, met with Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in New Delhi on Tuesday to discuss strategies for strengthening the state's higher education sector. The meeting covered institutional development, academic governance, and reforms aimed at improving the overall quality of education in the state.
The delegation raised concerns regarding affiliation issues at new degree colleges under Maharaja Bir Bikram University. They requested support from the Centre to ensure efficient academic administration. Additionally, the state representatives asked for a Ministry of Education official to join the search committee responsible for selecting a new Chairman for the State Higher Education Council.
Pradhan urged the state to align its educational goals with local development needs by identifying skill gaps and creating new courses. He set a target to achieve a 50 percent gross enrolment ratio by 2035. To facilitate this, the minister ordered the creation of a high-level committee to draft a vision document for the state, which will support the broader national objective of Viksit Bharat 2047.
Discussions also touched on expanding vocational training, with the state exploring potential collaborations with IIT Kharagpur to boost student employability. Regarding the leadership vacancy at Tripura University, Barman pushed for a swift resolution. Pradhan responded by confirming the government's commitment, stating, "Pradhan assured the delegation that the appointment process for a new Vice-Chancellor would be completed at the earliest."
