Agartala: The Tripura State Mental Health Authority served show-cause notices to 18 private rehabilitation centers and mental health facilities on September 9. These institutions face accusations of running operations without valid registration required by the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017. Officials gave the facilities seven days to explain why the state should not take administrative or legal action against them.
Failure to respond or cooperate will trigger punitive measures. Section 65(1) of the Act mandates registration to ensure standards for patient safety, food quality, room size, and accessibility. The Authority maintains that these facilities must operate within the law to protect patient dignity. An official statement noted the goal is to ensure "humane treatment and proper care."
The institutions cited include Jiban Jagrati Foundation, Holy Foundation, Rupayan Foundation, James Foundation, Relieve Foundation, Hill Foundation, Saksham Rehabilitation Center, Deep Foundation, Bethesda Rehab Facility, Welfare Society Muchang, Serene and Sober Foundation, Relieve Foundation at Sepahijala, Radhya Foundation, Rejuvenation Foundation, Yapiri Katal Foundation, Revival Foundation, TSB Counseling Center, and Edensend Foundation. Locations range from Santirbazar to Bishramganj.
Registration data across the state shows varying levels of compliance. West Tripura currently hosts 20 centers with 12 applications filed, while North Tripura has 3 centers with 2 applications. Dhalai has 4 centers, Khowai has 7, Unakoti has 3, Gomati has 2, South Tripura has 1, and Sepahijala has 3. Some facilities began the registration process immediately after receiving the notices.
