Agartala: A special court in Tripura’s Sepahijala district sentenced three men to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for their role in a major drug trafficking operation. The court also ordered each convict to pay a fine of Rs 1 lakh, noting that failure to settle the penalty will result in an additional six months of incarceration.
The sentencing follows the October 2024 arrest of Manik Miah, Madhai Shil, and Prasanta Roy. Police intercepted the trio in a vehicle near Kathalia Naka Point after receiving a tip-off. During the search, officers recovered 9,500 Yaba tablets hidden in a yellow plastic bag under the front passenger seat. The seized narcotics, which are a combination of methamphetamine and caffeine, carry an estimated street value of Rs 9.5 lakh.
Public Prosecutor Goutam Giri confirmed the convictions under Section 22(C) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. He stated that the investigation, led by Inspector Arup Debbarma, moved quickly to bring the case to a close. The accused, all residents of Rangamura village in South Tripura, faced trial after the police submitted a formal charge sheet on December 30, 2024.
Yaba tablets are frequently labeled the "crazy drug" due to their potent effects and are strictly banned across India. The court's decision concludes a case that began last autumn when authorities successfully disrupted a significant supply route in the Sonamura subdivision.
