Guwahati: A traditional boat race roared to life on the Sonai River today. The event kicked off in the Roumari and Hatipara areas of Rupohihat, Nagaon district, on September 12. Local crowds are massive. Organizers estimate the turnout at lakhs of spectators lining the riverbanks. This contest marks the first time the community has held the event since 2014.
Teams from across the surrounding region arrived to compete in the two-day program. The action continues through September 13, 2026. Organizers state that the event aims to revive and promote local traditions while uniting various Nagaon communities. The final round happens this Sunday.
Political heavyweights plan to appear at the closing ceremony. Attendees expected include Assam Agriculture Minister Pijush Hazarika, Keshab Mahanta, MLA Rupak Sarma, Jitu Goswami, and BJP candidate for the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election, Debashish Sharma. Organizers noted the event serves as a "traditional boat-racing culture" revival effort. Various other party workers and political leaders will join the spectators for the final day of racing.
