Tinsukia Bans Transporting Workers in Cargo Trucks

Guwahati: Tinsukia district administration just banned tea garden owners, factory managers, and construction contractors from hauling workers in trucks and pick-up vehicles. District Magistrate Sumit Sattawan issued the order immediately to stop the dangerous practice. The move follows reports of laborers riding in the back of cargo transport across the region.

The mandate cites Section 66 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Goods vehicles have no permit to carry passengers. The law requires employers to shift to safe transit options. They must now use buses, minibuses, or vans with proper seating. The administration stated, "Goods vehicles cannot ordinarily be used for carrying passengers except in circumstances permitted under law."

Authorities intend to enforce the rules strictly. The Senior Superintendent of Police for Tinsukia and Sadiya and the District Transport Officer received orders to crack down on violators. Anyone caught ignoring this directive will face legal action under the Motor Vehicles Act and other relevant statutes. The administration sent notice to all local businesses today.
