Tibetan Activists in Gangtok Protest China’s Ethnic Unity Law

Gangtok: Members of the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress rallied in Gangtok, Sikkim, to fight China’s Ethnic Unity Law. The protest joined a global wave of demonstrations led by the Tibetan Youth Congress. Crowds marched through the capital to condemn the legislation.

Protesters argue the law aims to erase their cultural identity. They claim the policy forces assimilation and threatens the Tibetan language, religion, and heritage. The rally also honored Martyr Lobga Rangzen. Organizers say he chose to self-immolate in front of the United Nations Headquarters to highlight the struggle for Tibet. Participants called his death a sacrifice for the greater cause of freedom.

The group demanded the United Nations take action against the human rights crisis currently unfolding in Tibet. They pushed for accountability regarding ongoing political repression. Activists also called for the immediate release of all political prisoners held by Chinese authorities. The demonstration stood as a firm reminder of their cause. The RTYC stated, "The movement for justice and freedom remains united globally." The march ended with renewed calls for independence and fundamental rights for the Tibetan people.
