Kohima: A 34-member team from St. Joseph's College in Jakhama represented Nagaland at the North-East NSS Festival. The event ran from July 16 to 20 in Gangtok, Sikkim. Thirty-two volunteers and two programme officers, Vikato Swu and Tokani L, made the trip. They joined 300 participants from across the region. The Sikkim State NSS Cell and the federal Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports organized the five-day gathering.
The program packed the schedule with technical sessions. Experts covered disaster management, cybercrime, mental health, and biodiversity. B K Sister Sonam led talks on self-belief. Deewaker Basnett provided career advice. Prof Bhoj Acharya discussed waste management, while DIG Tenzing Loden Lepcha addressed digital threats. Each day kicked off with Zumba and ended with cultural displays.
Nagaland excelled in the competitions. Bemolongmang M Chang and Visulu Rume took first place in the quiz. Vuruthong landed third in the PowerPoint presentation category. The team also performed a Meghalaya folk dance during the cultural exchange. Organisers noted the event focused on core goals. They stated the festival combined expert-led sessions, competitions and cultural activities, providing participants with opportunities for learning, interaction and community engagement while promoting the core NSS values of unity, service and social responsibility.
The St. Joseph's College NSS unit thanked the Nagaland NSS Cell and the state Department of Youth Resources and Sports for the trip. They also credited the NSS Regional Directorate in Guwahati and the Sikkim NSS team for the coordination.
