Kohima: NSS volunteers from across the eight Northeastern states are participating in a series of events aimed at strengthening leadership and national integration. A contingent of 32 students from St. Joseph’s College, Jakhama, attended the North East NSS Festival 2026 held at SC Bhawan in Gangtok, Sikkim, from July 16 to 20. Organized by the Sikkim State NSS Cell and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the event drew 300 participants for sessions on disaster management, cyber crime, and mental health.
The Sikkim event included cultural exchanges where Nagaland’s contingent performed Meghalaya’s folk dance. Bemolongmang M. Chang and Visulu Rume claimed victory in the quiz competition, while Vuruthong placed third in a presentation on state topography and culture. Days began with Zumba and finished with performances celebrating the region.
A separate five-day festival commenced July 27 at Kohima Science College, Jotsoma, under the theme Viksit Bharat. Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, advisor for school education, opened the event at RCEMPA by emphasizing character building. He noted that the NSS was introduced in 1969 to align with the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. "For us to build a nation, for us to build our home state, we need great characters," Dr. Yhome stated.
D. Carthigueane, Regional Director of the NSS North Eastern Region, highlighted the festival's role in personal development. Dr. Subenthung P. Tsopoe, Programme Officer at the host college, reinforced the shared mission of the attendees. "We are here to celebrate the spirit of unity, the spirit of selfless service, and the incredible diversity of the northeastern state of India," Dr. Tsopoe said.
The Jotsoma festival features 300 registered volunteers and includes cleanliness drives, technical sessions, and cultural showcases. The program concludes on July 31 with an address by Roko Angami, OSD for Sports. Organizers include the State NSS Cell Nagaland and the Regional Directorate of NSS in Guwahati.
