Kohima: Three hundred volunteers from across the eight Northeastern states arrived at Kohima Science College in Jotsoma on July 27. They are there for the five-day North East NSS Festival 2026. The event runs until July 31.
Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, advisor for School Education in Nagaland, opened the festival at RCEMPA. He challenged the students to embrace leadership and national integration. The event focuses on the theme of Viksit Bharat. Yhome reminded the volunteers that the NSS began in 1969 under Dr. D.S. Kothari to mark the 100th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
He emphasized the importance of character in nation-building. “Today, with this great legacy, we are also all proudly gathered here, to be part of this great nation building,” he said. The program falls under the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
D. Carthigueane, the Regional Director for the NSS in the North Eastern Region, spoke on the festival goals. He wants to help students improve their personalities and share their cultures. Dr. Subenthung P. Tsopoe, the NSS Programme Officer at the college, added that the goal is to serve humanity with compassion. State NSS Officer Ruokuovituo Zatsu confirmed the schedule includes quiz competitions, technical sessions, sightseeing, and cleanliness drives.
Principal Dr. Temjenwabang welcomed the crowd. Kivipu Jimomi delivered the invocation and Elvina Khangshou performed a special number. Roko Angami, the OSD of Sports for the Nagaland government, will handle the closing ceremony. The State NSS Cell of Nagaland organized the event in partnership with the Regional Directorate of NSS in Guwahati.
