Shillong: Tibetans gathered at Khyndai Lad on Wednesday for a candlelight vigil. They came to honor activist Lobga Rangzen. He set himself on fire outside the United Nations headquarters in New York on July 2. The protest centered on the ongoing Tibet issue.
Participants shaved their heads to show solidarity and mourning. Former MP Yangchen Dolkar attended the event. Tsering Dolma and Shillong Tibetan Settlement Officer Tsering Dorjee were also there.
The group voiced fierce opposition to China’s Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress. They claim the legislation attacks Tibetan identity, culture, and heritage. Community members labeled the law part of a broader policy of repression. One attendee stated the gathering served to "reaffirm its commitment to preserving Tibetan culture while continuing to raise its voice for freedom." They demanded the international community pay closer attention to the situation in Tibet.
