Gangtok: Purney Darjee, 55, died while in custody at the Singtam Police Station in Sikkim’s Gangtok district. Officers discovered the body on July 29. He had been detained just hours earlier regarding a drug-related investigation.

Police officials state Darjee took his own life while held in the station cell. A senior officer confirmed the circumstances: "Darjee hanged himself at Singtam Police Station within hours of being detained in a drug-related case."

The death remains under formal investigation. Authorities moved the body to a local facility for a mandatory post-mortem examination. Detectives are working to clarify the timeline and events leading to the death.
