Shillong: Five or six suspected Bangladeshi nationals robbed the home of Sarthe Teron early Thursday morning. Teron served as the headman of Dona Bhoi village near Umkiang, East Jaintia Hills. The gang struck between 3 am and 3:30 am while heavy rain fell and the power remained out.
The intruders sliced through a tin-sheet wall at the back of the house. Teron, his wife, and three young children slept through the initial breach. The thieves quickly tied the hands and legs of the entire family. One assailant pressed a knife against Teron's throat. He threatened the victims, saying, "Keep more money ready as they intended to return."
The robbers snatched 30,000 rupees in cash, a smartphone, new clothes, and school bags. Local residents chased the group after Teron raised the alarm, but the suspects reached the border fencing and escaped. Phanuel Tongper, president of the KSU-Narpuh Circle, led a delegation to the house to check on the family. The union voiced deep concern regarding security failures along the border.
