Guwahati: Four men on two motorcycles swiped a gold necklace from Saroja Sharma in Digboi on Tuesday. The heist occurred on the busy New Market-AOD Road, sitting just 500 metres from the Digboi Police Station. The victim, widow of late AOCLU leader Dipak Sharma, had just finished banking at Indian Bank. She waited at a three-wheeler stand near an SBI ATM and the Digboi Refinery boundary wall when the group attacked.
Sharma described the terrifying scene. She initially thought one bike approached, but she saw four men on two machines. "I can clearly recall now that there were two motorcycles carrying four persons. The first bike came towards me, and one of them raised his hand as if to assault me. When I instinctively tried to defend myself and stepped aside, another motorcycle coming from behind swiftly snatched the gold necklace from my neck and sped away. Everything happened within a matter of seconds," she said.
The stolen gold weighed over 30 grams, worth roughly Rs 5 lakh. The location is only 600 metres from the AOD Security Control Room. Police have opened an FIR and are currently hunting for the suspects. Detectives are pulling CCTV footage from across the AOD area to track the bikes and the culprits. Locals want more patrols and tighter security on this main commercial strip.
