Kohima: Government schools across Chakhroma are rotting from the inside out. The Chakhroma Students’ Union inspected 52 schools last month and found a system in total disarray. They discovered missing teachers, broken buildings, and hijacked food programs. The report landed on the desk of the Department of School Education this week.
Students are suffering. Hindi and Tenyidie classes are gone because there is nobody to teach them. Classrooms are scarce. Kids are forced to learn in crumbling, unsafe environments. The union also flagged the Mid-Day Meal scheme, alleging that officials are skimming off the top and feeding students low-quality rice. Cooks are struggling to feed children while their own pay remains stuck at an unlivable rate.
The physical state of these schools is equally grim. Clean water is non-existent. Bathrooms are filthy hazards. Many campuses lack walls, leaving children exposed. Technical failures are also blocking administrative work. The union reported that the "SMILE Application remains non-functional in several schools due to poor network connectivity and technical issues, thereby affecting the efficiency of timely submission of attendance."
Resources are non-existent. Schools lack printers, modern computers, and textbooks. Even uniforms are failing to arrive in the correct sizes despite prior measurements. The CSU warned that it will keep a close eye on the department. Leaders Menokhrielie Chalieue and Vibozo Tetso demanded immediate fixes to protect the future of the student body.
