Kohima: The Chakhroma Students’ Union (CSU) inspected 52 government schools throughout June. They found a system in collapse. The union reports acute shortages of subject teachers, leaving students without Hindi and Tenyidie instruction. Many classrooms sit empty or rotting.
Infrastructure is failing. The union highlighted dangerous sanitation facilities, no safe drinking water, and a lack of boundary walls. These conditions put kids at risk. Computers and printing equipment remain outdated, while textbooks for Class VIII are missing entirely.
Technical failures plague the classroom. The SMILE Application is dead in many locations because of poor connectivity, making attendance tracking impossible. Even worse, the union alleges that officials are skimming money from the Mid-Day Meal scheme. They also claim schools received substandard rice.
The union demands better pay for meal cooks to keep pace with the rising cost of living. They expressed frustration over the Department of School Education and its lack of follow-up on building projects. The CSU issued a stern warning to officials. "Lapses or misuse of funds would be viewed seriously and appropriate action pursued in the interest of students," the union stated in a press release.
The CSU intends to keep the pressure on. They plan to monitor all future developments at these schools. They want solutions, not excuses.
