Shillong: Carmel Fedrick Malngiang is heading to the national stage. The Wahkaliar local earned a spot among 30 youth climate leaders selected for the Climate Champions Fellowship 2026. This initiative comes from the Bring Back Green Foundation with backing from YuWaah at UNICEF India.
Malngiang targets river conservation, waste management, and responsible tourism in Sohra. He aims to protect the region. He spent three days in Bhopal last month at a Training of Trainers event. There, he gained skills in policy advocacy, youth mobilisation, and stakeholder engagement.
The fellowship runs for six months. It supports leaders between 18 and 29 years old who build climate resilience through grassroots work. Malngiang said the programme offers a chance to work with local communities, government agencies and civil society organisations to address environmental challenges. He will receive mentorship, technical support, and microgrants to run his projects.
The 2026 cohort includes people from 28 states and union territories. Many come from indigenous backgrounds. Organisers note that previous editions reached over one lakh people. Fellows might even attend COP31 to push their message further.
