Shillong: The Desert Regional Centre of the Zoological Survey of India held a bumblebee conservation event at Sohra Government College on July 31. This initiative targets the preservation of Himalayan wild pollinators. Experts pushed students and faculty to recognize the link between pollinator ecology and biodiversity health.
The session fell under the National Mission on Himalayan Studies. Scientist-E Dr. RH Raina leads the current research project titled, "Assessing Ecosystems for the Conservation and Management of Himalayan Wild Pollinators." The team is mapping bumblebee distribution and building DNA libraries to identify different species.
Climate change and habitat loss threaten these insects. Researchers warned that these environmental shifts put both natural ecosystems and local agriculture at risk. Research Associate Dr. Ishfaq Majeed Shah directed the ZSI team during the event. They credited ZSI Director Dr. Dhriti Banerjee and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change for the mission's backing.
The program folded in the principles of Mission LiFE to nudge participants toward sustainable daily habits. Sohra Government College Principal Arabiancy Mawa and instructor Banshanret Magaw helped organize the logistics. The day ended with a discussion on how pollinators sustain the environment, giving students a direct look at active scientific research.
