Shillong: Sohra officials shut down four major tourist sites on August 4. The Sohra Civil Sub-Division issued prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. The move follows a bitter ownership fight between Laitduh, Umblai, Mawphu, and Laitlyndop villages. Tensions in the Hima Sohra region reached a boiling point. The government fears a major breach of peace.

Weisawdong Falls, Dainthlen Falls, Mawsawa Falls, and Arliang Riat View Point are now off-limits. Authorities banned all sightseeing and commercial operations at these spots and their approaches. No one can collect entry fees or parking charges without specific authorization. Officials also prohibited gatherings of five or more people, excluding those on duty.

The order mandates a strict ban on weapons. You cannot carry firearms, traditional daos, explosives, spears, bows, or even sticks and iron rods. The magistrate warned that anyone caught violating these rules faces prosecution under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The administration acted because they believe "Immediate preventive measures are necessary to prevent danger to human life and property and to maintain public peace and tranquillity." The closure remains in effect until further notice.
