Shillong: Sohra Civil Sub-Division officials slapped a ban on four tourist sites Tuesday. Weisawdong Falls, Dainthlen Falls, Mawsawa Falls, and Arliang Riat View Point are now off-limits. Sub-Divisional Magistrate Mark A Challam issued the order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. The move follows a bitter ownership spat between Laitduh, Umblai, Mawphu, and Laitlyndop villages.
Officials fear the escalating tension will spark violence. The order covers the four sites and their approach roads. All sightseeing and commercial operations must stop now. No one can collect entry or parking fees unless they have official permission. "Immediate preventive measures are necessary to prevent danger to human life and property and to maintain public peace and tranquillity," the order stated.
Gathering in groups of five or more is banned for everyone except those on official duty. Carrying weapons, including firearms, explosives, and traditional daos, is forbidden. Magistrate Challam warned that anyone caught breaking these rules will face prosecution under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The shutdown starts immediately and stays in effect until further notice.
