Shillong: The Jaintia Student Movement (JSM) is fighting back. They handed a memorandum to Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on August 9 to stop what they call illegal cultivation by Karbi settlers. The land in question sits at Lum Pynthor, a site the group claims historically belongs to Lapangap village in West Jaintia Hills.
Trouble is brewing. JSM officials report that Karbi Anglong authorities plan to set up a permanent police outpost on this disputed turf. Local residents feel trapped and scared. The group insists the village never gave any green light for farmers to work the ground, and now, they want the Meghalaya government to protect their borders.
The JSM issued a firm warning about the potential for further unrest. They stated, "the organisation and local residents would be compelled to take their own course of action to protect the boundary" if the state ignores their pleas for intervention.
Copies of the complaint reached the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of West Jaintia Hills. The Doloi of Elaka Shilliang Myntang also received a copy to document the mounting pressure over the land.
