Meghalaya Tax Amnesty Scheme Hits 20 Crore Milestone

Shillong: Collections under the state government One-Time Settlement scheme for commercial vehicles hit 20 crore rupees. Transport Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar expects that number to climb before the August 31 cutoff. He anticipates roughly 200 more owners will sign up soon. The government hopes for 90 per cent compliance before the window slams shut.

Operators who ignore this chance will pay full freight. Owners must act now to claim the 80 per cent waiver on Motor Vehicle Tax, Goods and Passenger Tax, and linked penalties. The deal also covers a 90 per cent reduction on fitness certificate fines. Dhar insists the plan will not hurt the state bottom line. It effectively recovers tax cash that has been stuck in limbo for years. "He urged eligible operators to utilise the window, noting that failing to do so would mean missing a significant financial benefit."

State records track total debts near 1,100 crore rupees. A massive 900 crore of that total consists of fitness certificate penalties. Officials project the scheme could bring in between 180 and 200 crore rupees if owners take the offer. Roughly 65,000 vehicles have unpaid taxes, while over 57,000 face penalties for expired fitness documents. Once August 31 passes, standard motor vehicle laws apply. Owners will owe every cent in taxes and fines without mercy.
