Shillong: East Khasi Hills district is bringing government services to the people. The administration launched a pilot project this August to conduct driving licence tests at four local block headquarters. This change stops residents from traveling all the way to Shillong.
Rural applicants often lose a day of work or pay high transportation fees to finish their tests. They also rely on middlemen to get the job done. The new program targets the Mawkynrew, Sohra, Mawryngkneng, and Pynursla blocks to fix these issues.
Testing starts next week. Mawkynrew hosts tests on August 7, followed by Sohra on August 14, Mawryngkneng on August 21, and Pynursla on August 28. Motor Vehicle Inspectors will run the sessions from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at each site.
Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal stated the district wants to decentralize public services. The District Transport Office must hold these tests at least once a month, with local coordination managed by the Block Development Officer. Baranwal said, "Basically, we are working towards taking government services closer to where the people reside."
Officials hope this strategy makes the process transparent. If the pilot succeeds, the administration plans to roll out testing to more blocks across the district.
