Shillong: Shillong College officially adopted Mawkasiang village on August 30, 2026, under the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan program. The two parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding during the college's National Library Day celebration. This deal aims to link academic resources with community needs.
The college’s Central Library donated a resource catalogue and a collection of books to the Mawkasiang Community Library. Librarian Dr. Betbhalin Lyngdoh handed the materials to Rangbah Shnong Tishalding Kharkongor. Lyngdoh argued that the laws of library science still hold up today. She said, "The principles of Dr SR Ranganathan’s Five Laws of Library Science continue to guide institutions in ensuring knowledge remains accessible to all."
Vice-Principal EN Dkhar wants libraries to act as hubs for growth rather than dusty book rooms. Principal Dr. Shanwell Khongwir confirmed the college plans to run awareness drives on sports, education, healthcare, and environmental conservation in the area. The college views this as a long-term commitment to the village. Kharkongor promised the community would maintain the new resources and back future joint projects.
Students and local officials watched the handover. Representatives from the college administration, the Internal Quality Assurance Cell, and the Library Advisory Committee also attended the event.
