Kohima: The Shamator Village Council released a statement on October 16 condemning the targeted arson and vandalism of Tikhir community property. Homes and personal belongings were ruined over three consecutive days. Children lost their schoolbags, books, and essential documents during the violence.
The council rejects using tensions in the Pungro subdivision of Kiphire district as an excuse to terrorize innocent Tikhir residents. The attacks destroyed livelihoods and futures built over decades. They described the victimization as "alarming and unacceptable."
Reports indicate that individuals forced Yimkhiung tenants out of Tikhir-owned properties before destroying them. Other accounts suggest women in traditional Yimkhiung clothing blocked security forces from reaching the chaos. The council demands an inquiry into these obstruction claims and the administration's failure to stop the violence.
The council wants immediate legal action without political bias. They expect fair compensation for families, churches, shopkeepers, and tenants who lost property. They also called on the local MLA for the 58 Shamator Assembly Constituency to prioritize the suffering of residents over community interests. The state must restore peace, ensure security, and provide aid to the victims immediately.
